DVLA renew driving licence

To renew your driving licence in Great Britain, you can do so online, at a Post Office, or by post. The process varies slightly depending on your circumstances, such as whether you are renewing a full or provisional licence, and if you are over 70 years old or have a medical condition.

1. Eligibility to Renew Online

To renew your driving licence online, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of Great Britain (note that Northern Ireland has a different process).
  • Not be disqualified from driving.
  • Have either a driver and vehicles account or a UK passport (or an identity document used for UK Visas and Immigration if you’re not a UK citizen).

If your name has changed since your last application, you cannot renew online and must apply by post.

2. Required Information for Online Renewal

Before starting the online renewal process, gather the following information:

  • Your current driving licence (if available).
  • Your National Insurance number (if known).
  • Addresses where you have lived over the past three years.
  • Your UK passport (current or expired within the last 12 months).

3. Cost of Renewal

The fee for renewing your driving licence online is £14. Payment can be made using MasterCard, Visa, Electron, or Delta debit/credit cards. If you are over 70 years old or hold a short-term medical driving licence, there is no fee required.

4. Processing Time

Once you submit your application online, your new driving licence should arrive within one week. It is important to send back your old photocard licence to DVLA when you receive the new one.

5. Alternative Methods of Renewal

If you prefer to apply at a Post Office:

  • You will need to bring your reminder letter (if applicable), your photocard licence (if available), and pay a fee of £21.50.
  • If applying without a reminder letter, ensure you have your photocard, licence.

For postal applications:

  • Obtain a ‘D1 pack’ from a Post Office.
  • Include a recent passport-sized photo, your current photocard licence (if available), and payment via cheque or postal order (£17).
  • Send all documents to DVLA at Swansea SA99 1DH.

After applying by post or at the Post Office, expect to receive your new driving licence within three weeks.

6. Important Considerations

You can continue driving while waiting for your new licence as long as you’ve submitted a valid application and hold an existing valid driving licence issued since January 1st, 1976.

Remember that it is crucial to renew before the expiry date indicated on section 4b of your plastic photocard licence. You will receive a reminder notice approximately two months before expiration; however, it is not mandatory for DVLA to send this notice.
